John serves as motivational speaker and lead instructor when HPU men's basketball team visits inner city schools and after-school programs throughout the year, teaching basketball skills and offering life advice. He also reads to students at Kirkman Park Elementary School throughout the season. In 2013, he served as a part of the HPU Habitat for Humanity contingent that built a house in High Point. He helps serve food to the less fortunate at Open Door Ministries in High Point and assists with HPU men's basketball's participation in the Salvation Army Stuff-A-Stocking program each holiday season.
Brown's sense of purpose and goals for his future are deeply influenced by his past. Raised by his grandmother and mother, John developed a strong sense of family while living above the influence in a difficult part of Jacksonville. After the passing of his grandmother during his freshman year and his mother unexpectedly in 2015, Brown is driven daily by the desire to provide for his six-year old brother, Ja'Ron. Once his time in basketball is done, John wants to serve as a motivational speaker in Jacksonville, to help local children battle the same adversity he once faced as a kid.
